About Me

My name is Megan McNelis, but the people in my community in rural Thailand call me Nam-Taan. I'm 27 years old, and I'm a Peace Corps volunteer in the Isaan (northeast) region of Thailand, fairly close to the Cambodian border.

When I began my service, I promised by friends and family that I'd share my experiences in a blog. Not only is it a good outlet to talk about the unique experiences of service--it's a change to accomplish what we call "Third Goal"--bringing an understanding of Thailand back to America.

I have to say that there's still a lot I don't understand. Navigating a new culture in a very unfamiliar language is tricky enough--summarizing it for others to learn about Thailand is even trickier. I'm hoping I'll feel a bit less clueless as the months go on, but in the mean time I'll try my best to describe what it's like living and working as an American in rural Thailand.

Just remember that my experiences aren't the same as the experiences of other volunteers. My community is unique, and so is my perception of it. I just hope you get some enjoyment out of peeping through my lens every so often. Kop kun ka!
